Trash Rack Cleaner

The purpose of a trash rack cleaning unit is to remove accumulated dirt in a canal or river by collecting it in a grid structure.  

It is installed on the upstream side of pumping stations or on rivers.  The collected dirt is then picked up, transported and finally deposited into a container.

A trash rack cleaning facility consists of the following components:

  • Depending on the width of the canal, 1 or more removable stainless steel grid frames, equipped with vertical grid bars.  The spacing between the grid bars can be chosen: either 40 mm or 100 mm.  The grid frames are supported by guide profiles, arranged at an angle of 75° in relation to the horizontal surface.  The mechanical resistance of the grid frames with built-on grid bars has been calculated for a maximum water height upstream, without counterpressure downstream.
  • A stainless-steel gripper, consisting of a fixed part and a hinged part.  When cleaning, the fixed part of the gripper slides down against the grid bars into the accumulated dirt;  then 2 stainless steel hydraulic cylinders will close the hinged part of the gripper.  The fixed part of the gripper is adjusted to the spacing of the grid bars, assuring a smooth operation and intrusion.  The gripper widths vary between 1,200 mm up to 1,800 mm in the standard versions.
  • A carriage with support structure.

3 different types exist:
Overhead transfer type: carriage suspended from a monorail supported by a portal structure.  The gripper is suspended on steel cables, reeled on 2 cable drums.

Crane type: carriage with hinges crane arm, moving on a track fitted with crane rails.  The gripper is suspended from the end of the crane arm.

Hybrid type: combination of the overhead transfer type and crane type: carriage with fixed gallows arm, moving on a track fitted with crane rails.  The gripper is suspended on steel cables, reeled on 2 cable drums.

Overhead transfer type:

  • a geared motor with brake drives the 2 gripper cable drums suspended on the steel cables;
  • idlers prevent the undesired unwinding of the steel cables;
  • a hydraulic power unit feeds the hydraulic cylinders of the gripper;
  • an electrically driven hose reel operates the hydraulic TWIN hose, powering the hydraulic cylinders of the gripper;
  • the carriage is suspended from 2 trolleys, each equipped with 2 vulkanised runner wheels;
  • a geared motor with brake assures the transfer movement of the entire carriage on the monorail;
  • all necessary sensors and limit switches for detection in the control unit are provided;
  • the carriage frame and the machine housing are made of stainless steel.  The access hatches are equipped with gas springs;
  • the steel portal structure with monorail is anchored to the surrounding concrete structure.

Crane type:

  • the steel crane arm consists of a main arm and a swivel arm; the gripper is hinged to the end of the swivel arm;
  • hydraulic cylinders perform the movements of the crane arm;
  • a hydraulic power unit feeds the hydraulic equipment;
  • in this configuration, the crane arm is set up rotationally on a turntable with ring gear;
  • the rotational movement of the crane arm and the transfer movement of the carriage are powered by a geared motor or a hydraulic motor;
  • during the transfer of the carriage, all steel wheels of the carriage are driven;
  • the steel track with 2 crane rails is anchored to the surrounding concrete structure.

Hybrid type:

  • a geared motor with brake drives the 2 gripper cable drums suspended on the steel cables;
  • the end of the gallows arm has guide wheels, over which the steel cables roll;
  • idlers prevent the undesired unwinding of the steel cables;
  • a hydraulic power unit feeds the hydraulic cylinders of the gripper;
  • an electrically driven hose reel operates the hydraulic TWIN hose, powering the hydraulic cylinders of the gripper;
  • in this configuration, the gallows arm is set up rotationally on a turntable with ring gear;
  • the rotational movement of the gallows arm and the transfer movement of the carriage are powered by a geared motor or a hydraulic motor;
  • during the transfer of the carriage, all steel wheels of the carriage are driven;
  • the steel track with 2 crane rails is anchored to the surrounding concrete structure.

For each installation, we provide the following custom-engineered facilities:

  • access landings, handrails, stairs and ladders specific to the accessibility requirements and level of security;
  • the location and the track of the monorail or rail track to ensure a maximum integration in surrounding structures or to comply with legal building regulations;
  • preservation of steel structures: fire-galvanizing and painting in the desired RAL colour or hot-dip galvanizing;
  • level of automation: PLC control and integeration in already existing control systems.
