Grit and Scum Remover
In a water treatment plant, the grit and scum remover separates the grit (and oil and grease) from the contaminated medium.
There are 2 different types of grit and scum removers: the circular and the rectangular grit and scum remover. The feeding of the medium in the circular grit and scum remover basin takes place by means of a supply channel, fitted with flow dividers to ensure an even distribution of the flow.
The bottom scrapers shift the precipitated grit and the organic substances into a recessed pit, while the waste water on the other side of the collector flows over the overflow edges. In the case of a rectangular grit and scum remover, the bridge performs a back and forth movement.
The bridge can be equipped with a vacuum pump or bottom scrapers to remove the precipitated particles, and with surface scrapers to remove floating substances (scum).

At Vandezande, a grit and scum remover consists of the following main components:
Gantry structure
The gantry is made of an aluminium casing or of metal profile beams and spans the entire basin. The circular grit and scum remover gantry can also be made of concrete.
Drive unit
The drive unit of a circular grit and scum remover is similar to the one of a sludge thickener. The drive unit of a rectangular grit and scum remover is similar to the one of a rectangular scraper bridge.
Scraper mechanism
With a circular grit and scum remover the scraper arms are mounted to the central tube by means of struts. With a rectangular grit and scum remover the scraper mechanism is mounted onto the gantry unit and can be raised. During the forward movement the scraper mechanism is lowered, and during the backward movement it is lifted again. In both types, the scrapers are fitted with adjustable rubber strips, ensuring optimum removal of the thickened sludge.
Vacuum pump (for rectangular grit and scum removers only)
By blowing in air through suppressors in the bottom of the basin, the precipitated substances can be removed from the basin through a funnel-shaped inlet piece and a riser pipe. The vacuum pump is only active during the forward movement of the gantry.
Scum removal unit (for rectangular grit and scum removers only)
At the end of the forward movement, the floating substances are removed by means of the surface rakes. During the backward movement, the surface rakes are lifted.
Environmentally conscious infrastructure
Vandezande’s activities all fit within the scope of working on an environmentally conscious infrastructure. The construction of new locks to take transport off the road and group it in the form of shipping transport in order to further...
